From classic French cuisine to British cuisine pottage recipes and porridge recipes are two main meal recipes that have come together to form a classic Nigerian meal called Yam pottage/ Yam porridge. Among the French, pottage is a soup made from boiling vegetables, grains, and meat or fish to form a thick mushy staple food eaten all together as a main meal.

Pottage is similar to porridge and over time these two main meals have been used somewhat interchangeably to the point of having merged their recipes.

In Nigeria Yam is a major staple food and as such yam pottage is commonly eaten by forming a thickened meal out of starchy yams and mixed vegetables and sometimes meats and fish.

I made my yam pottage with scent leaves and Maggi signature pottage spice. Here’s the recipe for my classic Nigerian Yam Pottage.


PREP TIME: 30minutes

COOK TIME : 30minutes

TOTAL TIME : 1hour 

SERVES: 6 people

  • 1medium bulb Onions (chopped)
  • 3 cloves garlic (crushed)
  • 4cups blended tomato and pepper
  • 2tbsps crayfish ground
  • 2 large smoked fish
  • 1 handful scent leaf (chopped)
  • 2 cooking spoons palm oil
  • 1 medium yam (peeled and cubed )
  • 3 cubes Maggi classic cube
  • 2 sachets signature pottage


  • Heat pot and add palm oil
  • Saute onions and garlic, then add tomato blend.
  • Stir fry tomato blend while adding Maggi classic cubes.
  • Pour in cubed yams to the sauce and add sufficient water to cook the yam through. Stir and allow to simmer.
  • When yam is almost done, add smoked fish and crayfish.
  • Put lid back on and continue cooking until yam is very soft.
  • Using the back of a wooden spoon, mash yams up to thicken the sauce.
  • Add Maggi signature pottage and throw in some scent leaves.
  • Simmer for 2 minutes and turn the heat off.
  • Your yam pottage is ready to eat.
