Dantsurku (Traditional Fish balls)

Dantsurku are delicious and very filling fish balls packed with flavour.

Traditionally, it is eaten alone as a light snack in northern Nigeria. They are usually hawked on streets, market areas, or around public schools.


  • 3 medium Herring (shawa) fish; cleaned
  • 5 scotch bonnet (pepper); crushed
  • 1 small onion (chopped)
  • 2 Maggi seasoning cubes (crumbled)
  • 3 eggs
  • Oil for frying


  • Cover fish with water and cook till done.
  • Remove fish using slotted spoon and place in a large bowl.
  • Using a fork, flake fish to remove bones. Pick out as many bones as you can.
  • Add pepper, onions, and seasoning cubes.
  • Mix thoroughly and form into balls.
  • Break eggs and whisk lightly.
  • Heat oil till hot; dip balls in whisked eggs and deep fry till golden brown.
  • Serve hot, on a bed of lettuce and sliced tomatoes (optional).
  • Dress with lime vinaigrette, and garnish with lime wedges if desired.
